I am a few weeks late on
these following blog posts however they are going to be in English due to the
fact that I wrote them on my iPod on my extremely long travel day yesterday.
Almost 5 weeks ago (sorry
this is so late), I spent the weekend in Prague, Czech Republic with Clare and Danielle. I was so excited
to visit this amazing hidden city and explore pieces of my heritage. Our
trip to Prague consisted of connecting flights through Frankfurt, Germany and
we were able to say hello to an already visited country again. Flying Lufthansa
airline is much more luxurious than most of the other European airlines (as you
will see with my RyanAir experiences). We were provided with free dinner,
snacks, and drinks on both flights. Never a bad was for a college student on a
budget to being a trip. We arrived late that night so did not have time to do
any exploring of the city.
The following morning we got up early
and began exploring Prague. We went to the Old Tower Square and saw the
Astronomical Clock that rings upon the hour with a trumpet player, bells, and
many small moving people. After, we crossed the Vitava River using the Charles
Bridge. The bridge was covered with street venders, statues, and tourists.
We then went to the John Lennon wall
and love locks bridge. These two parts of Prague are somewhat hidden and it was
great because there were almost no tourists around. The wall is covered with pictures
and writing that have been spray-painted on. Over time people add to the wall
and every time you visit it is said to look somewhat different other than the
head painting. We signed out names on the wall before heading to a restauraunt
that sat looking over the river and Charles Bridge for lunch- where we had our
first experience paying with Czech Republic crowns currency.
Throughout the city there were a
number of random statues of large, strange objects said to be contemporary art,
such as a large bone hanging from a building. After lunch, we explored the
Prague Castle (the worlds largest castle). The castle is on top of a hill and
after walking though the main area of it, seeing the church in the middle, we
got a spectacular view of the entire city.
We then went back to the city and ate
some Trdelniks, traditional Prague dessert/snack. Trdelnik is a warm, roasted
dough topped with vanilla, sugar, and almonds. It was the perfect snack to have
while walking around in the cold all day.
We all got drinks on the top of a
rooftop terrace that had the most beautiful view of the center of Prague. The
buildings at night were lit up and they view was relaxing and gorgeous.
We met Danielle’s cousin for dinner
and walked through by the clock tower afterwards. We got some hot mulled wine,
a drink very popular in many European cities (we had some again in Paris and
Budapest).
On Saturday we went out to breakfast
and had omelets and tea (the first real omelet I had had since arriving in
Spain). Then we explored the Jewish Quarter, seeing many of the old and new synagogues,
and the Jewish cemetery within the city. We climbed to the top of the
Astronomical clock tower and got another view of the city. Then we walked
around, grabbed some lunch, and went for the most amazing dinner on the river
overlooking the Prague Castle. We spent 3 hours at dinner wrapped in our
personal little blankets provided by the restaurant and enjoyed the magical moment.
The next day we flew home and were
left with many amazing memories from this beautiful city. I can definitely see
myself returning to Prague in the future.
